BIG MAC
Week 10 was all about McDonald's, specifically the Big Mac. The lecture this week focused on the creation of McDonald's, it's movement across the world, and different themes associated with America's fast food joint. We were asked to write about an experience we had at McDonald's during our childhood. I distinctly remember the many trips to McDonald's on school buses after sporting events. It was something everyone looked forward to after a win - or a loss. Let's face it, a McDonald's chocolate milkshake or hut fudge sundae can make even the worst of losses a little better. The nearest McDonald's to my small town is 25 miles away, with another 30 miles away, and two more found here in La Crosse 45 miles away. Therefore, McDonald's is exciting when we get the chance to go! We were always given the option to go or just drive straight home, but who can resist a good greasy burger, milkshake, or those delicious-but-ridiculously-salty fries! The entire McDonald's would end up filled with sweaty baseball and softball players, or still preteen summer rec players just excited to order whatever they wanted without their parents. It was like one big family all enjoying supper together. Then there was the dessert trips home. You'd always order your milkshake or ice cream after you were done and save it for the ride home - making sure you still had fries left over to dip in it. What's that, you've never dipped your fries in a chocolate milkshake? YOU MUST! I know that the after sports McDonald's gatherings are a "tradition" for everyone in my school district's athletic conference. We all live in small towns, and well...don't get McDonald's very often. It is a treat to us! As I get older I do realize how terribly unhealthy McDonald's is and try to make more proactive choices when it comes to eating out. But every now and then you just have to! Who can resist a good Big Mac?!
1. McDonald's is introduced in Southern California in 1937 by brothers Richard and Maurice. Originally called "McDonalds Brothers Burger", the original drive in served hot dogs and hamburgers. Something wasn't right though. The brothers closed for some serious changes. The company reopened in 1948 with the true fast food style restaurant we know today.
2. In 1994 Britain, a trial dubbed the McLibel case, lasted three years as the McDonald's corporation fought against two environmental activists who had supposedly published pamphlets accusing McDonald's of destroying rain forests, and creating unhealthy food.
3. An anti-McDonald's campaign took place in France during the 1990's. French farmers protested against McDonald's. Farmers had protested against the World Trade Organization which put taxes on farm food coming from France.
4. The Slow Food Movement begins in Italy during 1986.
